Despite their brotherhood, Aaron and Phil Reed didn’t start playing music together until two years ago after Phil left their hometown of St. Charles, Missouri to join Aaron in the unsullied mountains of the American Northwest. The brothers family blend of folk encapsulates the grit and humor of Midwest life with the swagger and serenity of the west coast. Cultivated from years of performing in bands ranging from heavy metal to reggae and rock, to punk, country, and funk, their musical dichotomy is at the root of their diverse yet seamless folk brand.

Elektrapod is the brain child of guitarist Gabe Johnson aka Dr. Pocket (Jive Talkin’ Robots, Soulwork, El Dante). Formed with the vision of fusing funk, soul, disco and riff rock with groove and jam band sensibilities, the band taps uber-talented young chanteuse Ze Rox (Jaccuzi) on vocals, Matt Smith (Biddewah Trunk) on drums, Tyler Mason (Tone Red, El Dante, FloorRide) on bass, Jarrod Donatelli (2nd Hand Soldiers, El Dante) on percussion and Evan Read-Mullins on keyboards. With more than five years since their last release, the Lao Tizer Band has taken the time to grow in every aspect. An updated larger band is exploring some new methods on their upcoming CD/DVD combo, “Songs From The Swinghouse.” Recorded live in just three days at Conway Studios in Hollywood, the band explores three cover tunes with vocalist, a first for the group, alongside original instrumental tracks, bringing them to new heights of excellence and exuberance.

B-3 player Louis “King Louie” Pain and LaRhonda Steele have worked together sporadically going back to 1994, including in The Portland Soul All-Stars, the Linda Hornbuckle Band, and King Louie’s Blues Revue. But they began a closer musical association in 2013, leading to their critically acclaimed debut CD in late 2015. That CD, “Rock Me Baby,” has received a four-star review in Downbeat, as well as raves in numerous prestigious European magazines.

The title track, “Stealing Flowers” tells the story of a young girl who sees only the beauty in life, symbolizing the innocence of childhood. “Breathe” combines sultry vocals with slide cello harmonics for a unique sound that will lead your mind through a musical journey. “Fossils” message is to live today and features psychedelic duetting guitar lines. “Your Eyes,” where grunge meets The Beatles, is about conflict and resolution. “Syncopated Life Blues” has a sixties rock feel built to get you on your feet. In all, the collection of songs center around fun beats, dreamy vocals, and eclectic musical styles meant to expand the listener’s mind while keeping them guessing.

Since releasing their debut album, Stay Gold, the band has garnered a great deal of commercial success and moved on to sell tens of thousands of records nationwide. Stay Gold debuted at #1 on the iTunes Reggae charts and the single “Good Times” was on rotation at a number of radio programs including the coveted mainstream San Francisco station, Live 105.

Maxwell Friedman was just 9 years old when he discovered a dusty Hammond M3 in the corner of his piano teacher’s garage. The sensation of moving the drawbars and hearing the Leslie spinning next to him was a magical moment that changed the course of Maxwell’s musical trajectory. At age 11, he met famed organist Tony Monaco and began an educational journey with Tony as his organ mentor. Since then, Maxwell has become a rising star in the live music scene. The Hammond phenom has shared the stage with musical heavy hitters such as Karl Denson (legendary saxophone player of the Rolling Stones and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe), Michael Franti, Tony Monaco, The Werks, ALO, & Tank and the Bangas to name a few.

Grant, master instrumentalist, talented singer and natural entertainer nimbly walks the line between jazz tradition and modern pop. This soft-spoken Oregon native’s inspired songwriting produces propulsive R&B grooves, infectious melodic hooks, and stylish ballads with equal ease. He plays jazz piano with the harmonic sophistication and deep sense of swing that only comes from more than four decades on the bandstand. As one of the Pacific Northwest’s most renowned musical artists, Tom Grant’s career achievements reflect his unique ability to embrace the full spectrum of contemporary music.

Soul Vaccination is one of the tightest funk and soul bands in the PNW. As the Rose City’s favorite, Soul Vax infuses the stage with the greatest soul standards, and has been a fixture in the Northwest music scene for over 20 years. This high energy12 piece band features Glenn Holstrom on keyboards, along with the precision guitar playing of Mike Doolin. On bass is Grammy nominated producer John Linn, and on drums is Ron Tuttle, always bringin’ the funk and groovin’ hard. Portland’s own, Regina K, Mark Wyatt, and Porsch Anthony share their soulful vocal styles. Lewis Livermore and Dave Mills carry the backbone sound of the Soul Vax horns on trumpets, with Ron Regan, Gary Harris and Timothy Bryson on saxophones.

Honey Don’t is the musical union of Bill Powers and Shelley Gray, perhaps better known as one half of the Paonia, Colorado based old time-bluegrass band, Sweet Sunny South. Their music is acoustic and based in the folk tradition. They draw from their bluegrass and old-time background but also inject some country, blues and a little swing. The songs are catchy and engaging, funny, sad, lonesome and uplifting. Most of the songs are original, but select covers and traditional tunes are part of their repertoire as well.

The band began in early 2015 and has gone through many lineup changes. In late 2016 they release the album “JUNE”, the single “Kid Rock was featured on NPR and the Break it Down podcast. The host of Break it Down, Matt Carter: “the only negative thing I can say about them is that they haven’t blown up, they aren’t big yet”.
